It has been created in over 1,000 styles and now Fendi is not only preparing to reissue 6 of its iconic Baguette bags on June 1st but is being feted in a new book published by Rizzoli. The rectangular handbag which Silvia Venturini Fendi conceived back in 1997 was designed to be carried under the arm like a French loaf, the Baguette went on to become an accessories phenomenon, clocking up waiting lists around the world despite its eye-watering price tag.
Reincarnated in hundreds of versions, Mrs Fendi has chosen her six favourites styles which will be reissued in June to celebrate 15 years of the success story. She sought inspiration far and wide to create the bag’s diverse array of adornments. “I was in the garden playing with my children when Leonetta (my youngest daughter) started picking daisies and arranging them on my jeans” she says of the denim style encrusted with beads used to create a flower motif.
Sarah Jessica Parker has spoken about how influential the legendary Fendi Baguette was to the styling of Sex and the City. SJP has told the Financial Times: “In the very beginning, [stylist] Patricia Field and her team had to be industrious and creative with a low budget by getting clothes from thrift stores in order to tell interesting fashion stories. Fendi was really the first important design house to loan us items, with the Baguette handbag being the first. It really opened the floodgates and influenced the storyline – especially Carrie’s habit of spending more money on fashion than her home.”
